Hawes Wensleydale & The Ribblehead Viaduct

Hawes, Wensleydale and Ribblehead
Come and enjoy a day out on a scenic drive up and over to the pretty little market town of Hawes, set high up in the Wensleydale region of the North Yorkshire Dales National Park.  Today is market day so come and browse the market stalls, pay a visit to Wallace and Gromit at the Wensleydale Cheese Experience and take a photo of one of the most amazing feats of engineering the Ribblehead Viaduct, a part of the Settle/Carlisle Railway line, as seen on t.v in Michael Portillo's Great Rail Journeys.

Wensleydale
Famous for its cheese, historic villages, traditional markets and crafts, Wensleydale provides an excellent base from which to explore the National Park.  Its wide open valley, dotted with softly rounded hill sides left by retreating glaciers, gives it a very distinctive appearance.

Hawes
This pretty little market town is one of the highest towns in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.   Come and spend an hour or more browsing the market stalls, looking at the collection of quirky shops and  even say hello to Wallace and Gromit at the Wensleydale Cheese Experience where you could maybe see how the famous cheese is made!  (Cheese Demonstration not included)

The Ribblehead Viaduct
On our way back from Hawes, we make a stop as close as we can get to the famous Ribblehead Viaduct or Batty Moss Viaduct.  This amazing feat of engineering carries the Settle–Carlisle railway across Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley at Ribblehead, in the North Yorkshire Dales. The viaduct, was built by the Midland Railway.   It is a Grade II* listed structure.  It is without a doubt the most impressive structure on the Settle-Carlisle Railway.
